| Highlight: 150 Years of Bridges Across the Mississippi
On January 23, 2005, Minneapolis celebrated the 150th anniversary of the opening of the first permanent span across the Mississippi River anywhere along its entire length. The Central Riverfront District is particularly noted for its bridges, both historical and contemporary, including the first permanent bridge to span the Mississippi River at any point along its length, opened in 1855. The Central Riverfront Regional Park, which comprises the riverfront park corridor running from Plymouth Avenue to I-35W, is the location of the birthplace of Minneapolis and is full of interesting historic sites. The park forms part of the St. Anthony Falls Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. For more information on the bridges of the Central Riverfront, visit www.mrdbridges.com.
